Why Corporate Governance Is Important In Financial Industry Finance Essay - Free Essay Example

Corporate governance is most often viewed as both the structure and the relationships which determine corporate direction and performance. The board of directors is typically central to corporate governance. Its relationship to the other primary participants, typically shareholders and management, is critical. Additional participants include employees, customers, suppliers, and creditors. The corporate governance framework also depends on the legal, regulatory, institutional and ethical environment of the community. Whereas the 20th century might be viewed as the age of management, the early 21st century is predicted to be more focused on governance. Both terms address control of corporations but governance has always required an examination of underlying purpose and legitimacy. (James McRitchie, 1999) Corporate governance is important for all organization not only today but has and will always be. However, it is specifically very important for the financial industry due to various reasons which will be discussed subsequently. The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) suggests sound corporate governance of financial institutions need to be in place in order for banking and financial supervision to operate effectively. Consequently, banking supervisors have a st rong interest in ensuring that there is effective corporate governance at every bank. Supervisory experience underscores the necessity of having appropriate levels of accountability and managerial competence within each bank. Essentially, the effective supervision of the international banking system requires sound governance structures within each bank, especially with respect to multifunctional banks that operate on a transnational basis. A sound governance system can contribute to a collaborative working relationship between bank supervisors and management. The following are some of the factors that deem it necessary to have very good corporate governance in financial institutions: Financial firms are opaque in nature and gives rise to significant information asymmetries. This makes it difficult to assess management performance. Current deregulated nature of financial institutions have made the nature of the activities of employees and managers moved from traditional acti vities toward decision-making activities. This has created greater potential for risk and results not expected or desired by shareholders and other stakeholders. Governance is an activity in which communal benefits resultant from private supervisory in the finance industry plays a dominant role. Limitations such as on takeovers, ownership concentration, prudent supervision, etc. could weaken product market discipline. This could further lead to weakening of the private sectors undertaking other governance functions. Financial firms hold equity stakes, grant credit and, hence, examine performance, which facilitates them to make a strong impact on governance of other institutions. Financial innovations potentiality weakens traditional governance processes. The role of banks is integral in any economy. They provide financing for commercial enterprises, access to payment systems and a host of a variety of retail financial services for the economy as a whole. Some banks even have a broader impact on the macro sector of the economy by facilitating the transmission of monetary policy by making credit and liquidity available in different market conditions. The integral role that banks play in the national economy is demonstrated by the almost universal practices of states in regulating the banking industry and providing, in many cases, a government safety net to compensate depositors when banks fail. Financial regulation is necessary because of the multiplier effect that banking activities have on the rest of the economy. The large number of stakeholders, whose economic well-being depends on the health of the banking sector, further depends on the appropriate regulatory practices and supervision. Indeed, in a healthy banking system, the supervisors and regulators themselves are stakeholders acting on behalf of society at large. The primary function is to develop substantive and other risk management procedures for financial institutions in which regulat ory risk measures correspond to overall economic and operational risks faced by a bank. Accordingly, it is imperative that financial regulators ensure that banking and other financial institutions have strong governance structures, specially, in light of the pervasive changes in the nature and structure of both the banking industry and the regulation which governs them. In this respect, the role of legal issues is crucial for determining ways to improve corporate governance for financial institutions, such as, the enforceability of contracts, including those with service providers, clarifying governance roles of supervisors and senior management, ensuring that corporations operate in an environment that is free from corruption and bribery and laws/regulations, etc. aligning the interests of managers, employees and shareholders, all help to promote a strong business and legal environments that support corporate governance and related supervisory activities. Further, corporate g overnance is very important to financial institutions in the present context is post-crises situations. The financial crisis can be to an important extent attributed to failures and weaknesses in corporate governance arrangements. When they were put to a test, corporate governance routines did not serve their purpose to safeguard against excessive risk taking in a number of financial companies. A number of weaknesses have been apparent. The risk management systems have failed in many cases due to corporate governance procedures rather than the inadequacy of computer models alone: information about exposures in a number of cases did not reach the board and even senior levels of management, while risk management was often activity rather than enterprise-based. These are board responsibilities. In other cases, boards had approved strategy but then did not establish suitable metrics to monitor its implementation. Company disclosures about foreseeable risk factors and about the sys tems in place for monitoring and managing risk have also left a lot to be desired even though this is a key element of the Principles. Accounting standards and regulatory requirements have also proved insufficient in some areas leading the relevant standard setters to undertake a review. Last but not least, remuneration systems have in a number of cases not been closely related to the strategy and risk appetite of the company and its longer term interests. Question 02 Why do Islamic banks need to give special care to corporate governance and what advantages does it provide to them? Answer 02 Very little is written on governance structures in Islamic banking, despite the rapid growth of Islamic banks since the mid 1970s and their increasing presence on world financial markets. There are now over 180 financial institutions world-wide which adhere to Islamic banking and financing principles. These banks operate in 45 countries encompassing most of the Muslim world, along with Europe, North America and various offshore locations. Islamic financing increasingly is a market segment of interest of Western banks and the latest addition to the list of Islamic banks in October 1996 in the City Islamic Investment Bank, Bahrain a wholly owned subsidiary of Citicorp. Islamic banking represents a radical departure from conventional banking and from the viewpoint of corporate governance, it embodies a number of interesting features since equity participation, risk and profit-and-loss sharing arrangements from the basis of Islamic financing. Due to the bank dealing in Riba, an Isla mic bank cannot charge any fixed return in advance, but rather participates in the yield resulting from the use of funds. The depositors also share in the profits according to predetermined ratio, and are rewarded with profit returns for assuming risk. Unlike a conventional bank which is basically a borrower and lender of funds, an Islamic bank is essentially a partner with its depositors, on the one side, and also a partner with entrepreneurs, on the other side, when employing depositors funds in productive direct investment. These financial arrangements imply quite different stockholder relationships, and by corollary governance structures, from the conventional model since depositors have a direct financial stake in the banks investment and equity participations. In addition, the Islamic bank is subject to an additional layer of governance since the suitability of its investment and financing must be in strict conformity with Shariah and expectations of the Muslim community at large. Islamic financial institutions display key distinguishing features requiring special care when it comes to the corporate governance mechanisms. They are as follows: Stakeholders include large number of depositors and their deposits are not guaranteed. Islamic banks operate on the model of universal banking. This is very close to the deregulated banking system. Financial activities are spread over a large spectrum from the usual customary traditional finance. Islamic financial institutions holding equity would enable them to sit on various companies Board of Directors. Thereby they could influence corporate governance mechanisms of the latter. Corporate governance and ethical standards provides many an advantage to Islamic banks. If an Islamic financial institution practices very good corporate governance, it helps them to build a good and strong brand image. Through this good and strong brand image they are able to attract a higher customer base leading to hig her and greater customer loyalty. Once they have captured the customers loyalty, there is greater commitment towards the employees. Once the employees are given greater commitment they become passionate and drive with a lot of creativity. Having large amounts of creativity in a very competitive and volatile environment can drive an organization to have immense competitive advantage. Question 03 Why do banks need to be regulated and supervised? What are the key tasks facing regulators for creating a level playing field for Islamic banks within a countrys overall regulatory framework that includes the operations of conventional banks? Answer 03 A logical first reason is that a strong and adaptable banking system helps the monetary authorities to carry out monetary policy, that is, to implement decisions about money supply and interest rates. In this sense, regulation is a public good, because everyone benefits from an effective monetary policy. A second more practical reason relates to the unique nature of the business of a bank. The business of a bank can for arguments sake be reduced to, on the one hand, the taking of deposits from the public and, on the other hand, the lending of those same funds to others at a profit. The liabilities of banks, namely the deposits held on behalf of clients, are generally short term and certain in amount the bank must repay the full amount from its resources. The assets of a bank, namely the loans made, are generally longer term in nature, but actually uncertain in value the bank can never be sure that the debtor will repay the loan over the specified period. The nature of a banks business is therefore inherently highly risky, and poor decisions can easily lead to the demise of a bank and the loss of depositors funds. When this happens, often the confidence in the banking system is harmed, and, in order to avoid this, public funds are sometimes used to save an ailing bank. Either way, the cost of a bank failure to society as a whole is often higher than the private cost (that is, shareholder losses), which is a compelling reason for supervising banks to ensure that they are always prudently managed by competent, experienced and ethical individuals. Another reason why banks are usually regulated is the asymmetry of information that is, the unequal availability of information to all interested parties. Depositors do not have sufficient information about the true risks that a particular bank faces, and whether the risk they take in placing their money with the bank is commensurate with the interest to be earned on the deposit. A final reason for the regulati on and supervision of banks is to protect depositors against unscrupulous organizations that misrepresent themselves as banks and unlawfully collect deposits before absconding. All developed countries, and less developed countries, have a banking supervisory authority. Although the principles are largely the same, supervisory authorities may differ regarding their degree of autonomy, relationships with other financial regulators, and supervisory approaches or methods employed. Central Banks and Regulators could play a crucial role in the development of a framework for Shariah compliant monetary policy instruments to operate within a level-playing field. Supervisors are faced with a dual challenge. One hand, they promote financial diversification and consolidation to achieve market development and on the other side they have to position themselves to recognize new dimensions and new types of risks and encourage appropriate risk mitigation plans. Regulators need to practic e flexibility and work with Islamic banks such as to become well acquainted with needs of the industry and subsequently develop successful and acceptable regulatory frameworks. Further, regulatory authorities and market participants should be very well-versed with the nature and implications of the rules adopted in jurisdictions where there are heavy constraints on Islamic finance operations. This would facilitate greater market discipline and no undue burden on the Islamic financial institutions. Therefore, regulatory and supervisory authorities operating in dual banking systems, i.e. conventional as well as Islamic, should be mindful of setting up regulatory frameworks, since they should be pragmatic and flexible in internationally accepted prudential and supervisory requirements. According to Shariah principles, Islamic banks cannot guarantee repayment of full amount of deposits, in Western countries requiring that deposits have to be returned in full. In Muslim countries s eparate regulations have been developed to allow banks to share the risk of loss on investments with their clients. The final solution was to structure a Mudharabah agreement whereby savings and deposit/investment accounts in such a manner that FSA was satisfied that the risk of loss of amount deposited by the depositors was minimal. Key features included a bank setting aside reserves earned from investment in special reserve accounts before the distributing of profits to the depositors. This reserve was further to be used to cover any losses that arose from investments. Another feature was allowing depositors decide if they wanted capital losses to be made good. A depositor complying with Shariah principles would not require such losses to be made good. The Islamic Financial Services Board (IFSB) was established with the aim to promote the development of a prudent and transparent Islamic financial services industry and provides guidance on the effective supervision and regulatio n of institutions offering Islamic financial products. The IFSB has produced international standards on capital adequacy and risk management for Islamic Financial Institutions, and has made progress in developing standards on corporate governance. These international standards are intended to assist regulators and supervisors in pursuing soundness, stability, and integrity in the world of Islamic finance.

Relationship between China-Japan, China-Australia and...

In this section I will be detailing and comparing the relationships between China-Japan, China-Australia, and China-Venezuela. I am first going to start with the relationship between China and Japan. I will begin with the time frame between the years of 1949-1969. During this time, China sees Japan as a threat, which is not surprising because of Japan’s assault against China in the 1890s to 1920s, Japans brutal occupation of China in the 1930s and 1940s and Japan’s role in America’s containment strategy against China. China counters Japan by forming a military alliance with the Soviet Union in 1950. This alliance was indirectly directed at the United States but primarily directed against Japan. China tried to encourage Japan to have better relations by playing upon Japanese war guilt and issues of Japanese behavior in the 1930s and ‘40s. This didn’t work in the political dimension of the relationship. China felt that better relations with Japan would be useful, both politically and economically. But Japan would not normalize relations because of its close relationship with the United States and the nationalists. On the economic front, things were different, as trade started to grow. The countries are so close to one another that it made sense. Meanwhile, Japan is still recovering from the war, but is recovering rapidly and becomes an important potential partner for China. In the 1960s the forming of a trade relationship began. Barriers of Effective Communication free essay sample

Barriers of Effective Communication Barriers of Effective Communication CJA/304 January 14, 2013 Stewart Stanfield Barriers of Effective Communication Barriers of Effective Communication The common goal of all communication is to take one idea and transfer it from one location to another. Communication is essential in everything that we do. It is also vital that communication is clear in order for it to be effective. If this is established, then the goal has been accomplished. According to our reading for week one, â€Å"70 percent of our time is spent communicating. Even with the prominence of communication in everyday functions, however, little, if any, study of communication techniques is required in high schools, colleges, and police academies. † (The Need for Effective Communication. H. Wallace J. D. , C. Roberson L. L. M. 2009). There are three major barriers in communication: language, distraction, and false assumption. Language can be a barrier because if a request is not specified, people can interpret differently. For example, if I tell someone that something needs to be done as soon as possible, said person could interpret that to mean as soon as they get the opportunity to do so as opposed to getting on that specific task immediately. Distraction is the second barrier that exists in communication because everyday life does not come to a halt upon communication with someone. Many distractions consist of noises such as phones or phone calls and other conversations being conducted simultaneously. If a person is distracted with personal issues, it can cause them to fail to pay complete attention to what is being said or asked of them. Finally, false assumption is also a major barrier in effective communication. This is something that happens quite often. False assumption basically means when someone is being given instruction and assumes they know all about what is being asked. When this is done, Barriers of Effective Communication people neglect to finish paying attention to detail and may cause them to do what is requested accurately. Is there a difference between listening and hearing? Yes, there is. Hearing requires no effort. It is the ability that most of us are born with. Hearing defines only the physical measurement of the sound waves that are transmitted to the ear and into the brain where they are processed into audible information. Hearing occurs with or without your consent. † (Hallesvig-Gaskell K. Difference Between Hearing and Listening Skills). Listening, on the other hand, requires us to pay attention and concentrate on words being spoken to us. â€Å"Listening goes far beyond your natural h earing process. It means paying attention to the words that are being spoken with the intention of understanding the other person. Your personal perceptions and prejudices can affect the quality of your listening skills. .† (Hallesvig-Gaskell K. Difference Between Hearing and Listening Skills). In the criminal justice field, communication is very vital. Criminal justice professional have formal and informal forms of communication, although both equally important. Law enforcement personnel pretty much have to master the art of communication in order to conduct their duties effectively. In this field, majority of their communication is conducted through written form. With that being said, written communication is very important. These types of written communication include arrest reports, investigation reports and or follow-ups on said reports, memorandums, and all day-to-day paper work. Oral communication in the criminal justice field is just as important because a big portion of their communication is relayed from regular citizens. Officers have to learn how to Barriers of Effective Communication effectively, as well as professionally, communicate with the public in order to effectively serve the public. There are many obstacles that can occur while trying to gather information from a citizen requiring assistance from these professional depending on the situation and the severity of the nature of the call. This goes hand in hand with effective listening skills because this is a perfect example of a major barrier in communication; distractions. Distractions are a major barrier in effective communication for law enforcement officers because most of the time, they are first responders to 911 calls. These distractions can be very difficult to overcome at times because the nature of the scene they may be arriving upon can be very intense. Many times when officers are trying to gather information form people, be it witnesses, victims, and even suspects, people may be distraught or ambulances are coming on scene with sirens going on, people yelling out of fear, pain, things of this nature. So, I guess the question is, what are strategies that can help overcome the barriers that impede from effectively communicating at times. Both written and oral communication skills are very important in the criminal justice field and by practicing on sharpening these skills on a daily basis can only help and improve on these vital skills one needs in this filed. Written communication is effective when proper grammar is used, to include spelling, punctuation, non-repetition so as to not confuse the reader, thing of this nature. Oral communication can also be improved by practicing listening effectively on a daily basis as well. This means providing undivided attention to whoever is speaking to you. Understanding that distractions around you are always going to exist, practicing on learning how Barriers of Effective Communication to be able to divert your attention from that and just focusing on who is speaking will only help sharpen those skills. Effective communication is essential in any profession, but vital in any criminal justice organization. Communication can often make or break a case. It can save lives but by the same token, it can also cost lives. It can lead a case into a guilty verdict, or it can have a case thrown out due to either written or oral communication. Communication is vital for everyone’s safety in this field. Everyone gains from practicing effective communication skills. Its aboutthe stories the Chinese created to explain the world around them, and generallyhow they perceived their surrounding environment. This report deals withancient myths and the people who believed them, and what the current believes ofthese people are. The Southwest Creation StoryThe Southwest creation story is a myth which explains why people are different. The myth begins by saying that there were people on earth who were all alike, meaning there werent people who were black, white, oriental, etc.. It statesthat the humans on earth all generally were the same. There were also gods wholived above the clouds in the heavens. And there was a huge heavenly ladderwhich started on a mountain and reached all the way up to heavens door. Itgoes on to tell a story of a man who had two children. One was a girl and theother was a boy. The man had built theroof so thick because it rained almost every day. He hated the rain. He knewit had its benefits but too much of it ruined his crops, destroyed his livestockand every time it rained the roof of the house was destroyed. And every timethe man rebuilt it, he made it thicker and thicker. He blamed all hismisfortune on the Duke of Thunder. The Duke of Thunder was one of the gods wholived in the heavens. He was the god of rain and thunder. The man dispised theDuke very much and had a pure hatred of him. Every time it rained the Duke would descend from the heavens and stand on ahilltop. There he would watch with pure delight as the rains and thunder camedown harder and harder. Finally the man had had enough. One day he took hisaxe and waited on the hilltop for the Duke to arrive. When the rains came so didthe Duke, and the man slashed him in the back. The Duke washurt but not killed because he was a god. The man caged him and brought himhome. He put him in a corner and warned the kids not to go near him. And toespecially not give him water. The next morning was a beautiful sunny one, butthe Duke looked horrible almost as if he was dehydrating. The man told thechildren he had to go to the market and said again not to go near the Duke nomatter what he does and dont give him water. After the man left the Dukestarted moaning. He begged the children to give him some water but they refusedfollowing their fathers orders. The Duke pretended he was dead with his mouthhung open and he had his lips very dry. The girl was worried, she thought he was dying so she gave him one drop ofwater. The Duke instantly jumped back up and tore apart the cage. Thechildren were terrified. He came over to them and promised them that theywill be rewarded for their deed. He gave them a small egg and told them toplant it in the ground and then he left. When the man came back he wasshocked by what had happened. He knew the Duke would be very angry and wouldpunish him. So he didnt waste any time and started to build a ship. Aftera months time the ship was finished. It was built out of the strongestmaterial known to him. .u5406815433d5d1d6ef80f2ce28aaf9ee , .u5406815433d5d1d6ef80f2ce28aaf9ee .postImageUrl , .u5406815433d5d1d6ef80f2ce28aaf9ee .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u5406815433d5d1d6ef80f2ce28aaf9ee , .u5406815433d5d1d6ef80f2ce28aaf9ee:hover , .u5406815433d5d1d6ef80f2ce28aaf9ee:visited , .u5406815433d5d1d6ef80f2ce28aaf9ee:active { border:0!important; } .u5406815433d5d1d6ef80f2ce28aaf9ee .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u5406815433d5d1d6ef80f2ce28aaf9ee { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u5406815433d5d1d6ef80f2ce28aaf9ee:active , .u5406815433d5d1d6ef80f2ce28aaf9ee:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u5406815433d5d1d6ef80f2ce28aaf9ee .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u5406815433d5d1d6ef80f2ce28aaf9ee .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u5406815433d5d1d6ef80f2ce28aaf9ee .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u5406815433d5d1d6ef80f2ce28aaf9ee .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u5406815433d5d1d6ef80f2ce28aaf9ee:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u5406815433d5d1d6ef80f2ce28aaf9ee .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u5406815433d5d1d6ef80f2ce28aaf9ee .u5406815433d5d1d6ef80f2ce28aaf9ee-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u5406815433d5d1d6ef80f2ce28aaf9ee:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The U.S. Penal System EssayMeanwhile the egg the children planted had grown to a size of about two smallpeople. Then one day what the man had anticipated came. Huge torrentialdownpours of rain started and there were tremendous floods. The man jumped intothe ship he built, in his panic he had forgotten about the children. They hadran into the egg which had become soft. The floods were so great that the manin his ship reached all the way to the door of the heavens. He banged the doorsand yelled let me in! The gods didnt want mortals in the heavens, so the Dukewas ordered to recede the floods. He took the floods back so fast that the manfell back to the earth and was crushed by his ship. The children in the soft egg bounced back to the ground safely. When they cameout, they saw everything was destroyed. They were the only ones left. Theylived happily for a while and after some time they had a child. Because theywere brother and sister the child was deformed and died a short time later. Thetwo kids chopped up the baby into tiny pieces and put him in a bag, and theystarted climbing up the heavenly ladder. The bag ripped before they could reach to the top and all the piecesfell back to earth. They fell all over the continents, and from them the newpeople developed. They were different in appearance from each other dependingon where they lived. This myth explains why there are people who look so muchdifferent from each other. This myth suggests that man was more responsible forthe creation of the new humans than the gods. Because of the actions of the manthe people were created. The Heritage of a KingThis is a myth about fate. In this myth a man named Zoa chi who is a king triesto find out his fate. Zoa was a survivor. When he was little his parents wereassassinated. An attempt at his life was also made but his older brotherprotected him. The murderer was his uncle who betrayed his father and overthrewhis power. He stayed in exile with his brother until he was older. Over theyears his hatred of his uncle had made Zoa a very stern man. He had wowed toget his revenge. He became a great fighter and started a group of followers whoalso were against the king. Then finally the day he had been waiting for hadarrived. With his small army he overpowered the kings army. Growing up onthe streets had made Zoa a great strategy leader, so he was able to defeatthe huge overconfident kings army. He killed the king and took over thethrone. Years went by and he himself became overconfident and selfish. Hecreated a fantasy image of himself as a great man. He thought that nothi ngon this planet could defeat him. As time went by he became just like hisuncle. Absolute power had corrupted him. Then one day he declared to all his subjects that he was a god and expected tobe worshipped. This was too much for the people, they rebelled but Zoa crushedall their resistance. One of his advisors told Zoa that he knew a magician whocould greatly help him in keeping down further rebellions. He said that thisman could see the future and help him stop protesters before they could organiseand challenged him. The king immediately called the man to his castle. Themans name was Hou. He told the king that there will be a man who will kill himsoon. And that man would be a close relative of his. The king knew exactly whom Hou was talking about. Zoas son Zhuan was almostthe age where he could become king if something happened to his father. .u57107ffbc0d4239c1792afd2f868e0c6 , .u57107ffbc0d4239c1792afd2f868e0c6 .postImageUrl , .u57107ffbc0d4239c1792afd2f868e0c6 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u57107ffbc0d4239c1792afd2f868e0c6 , .u57107ffbc0d4239c1792afd2f868e0c6:hover , .u57107ffbc0d4239c1792afd2f868e0c6:visited , .u57107ffbc0d4239c1792afd2f868e0c6:active { border:0!important; } .u57107ffbc0d4239c1792afd2f868e0c6 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u57107ffbc0d4239c1792afd2f868e0c6 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u57107ffbc0d4239c1792afd2f868e0c6:active , .u57107ffbc0d4239c1792afd2f868e0c6:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u57107ffbc0d4239c1792afd2f868e0c6 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u57107ffbc0d4239c1792afd2f868e0c6 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u57107ffbc0d4239c1792afd2f868e0c6 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u57107ffbc0d4239c1792afd2f868e0c6 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u57107ffbc0d4239c1792afd2f868e0c6:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u57107ffbc0d4239c1792afd2f868e0c6 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u57107ffbc0d4239c1792afd2f868e0c6 .u57107ffbc0d4239c1792afd2f868e0c6-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u57107ffbc0d4239c1792afd2f868e0c6:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Is Junk Food Really Cheaper? EssayImmediately Zoa ordered Zhuan to be imprisoned. He said this was anotherexample of how clever he was, he said he saw the future and beat fatesdestiny. He even said that he was better than any other god the peoplebelieved in. When he went to see Zhuan his older brother went with him. Zhuan pleaded with Zoa and said he would never even think of killing his ownfather. But Zoa didnt believe him. He sentenced Zhuan to death. But before Zhuan could be killed older Zoasbrother beheaded him when he facing his son. Zoa was killed by his ownbrother who was ashamed of what his younger sibling had become. What themagician didnt tell Zoa was which close relative would kill him. Zoa whohad become overconfident wasnt as great as he thought he was. And he wastoo arrogant to not know that the gods should not be challenged. This mythtells that becoming overconfident will eventually hurt you and that no onecould beat their destiny. The Chinese in this story believed in the gods, they were very religious people and this myth tells that the gods should notbe challenged. Both of these myths were written a long time ago and I dont think that thepeople today still believe in these myths as strongly as the people who wrotethem did. I think its like Halloween in our culture. We still practice thecustom as the ancient people did but we dont have as much as a strong believein ghosts and goblins as our ancestors did. Hidden Behind Closed Doors Essays - Laundry, Pierrot, Toonami

Hidden Behind Closed Doors Essays - Laundry, Pierrot, Toonami Hidden Behind Closed Doors Michaela Daugherty Writing 121 Assignment # 1 M-W-F 2:00pm HIDDEN BEHIND CLOSED DOORS Every day of their hectic week, women all over the world are being summoned to a dark dreary dungeon. Women of all ages, race, creed or economic status are not immune to this fear. We as women must all endure this torture. Where would you find this dungeon, women descend to virtually 365 days a year? The answer will surprise you, since the majority of women find these dungeons in their own homes. Builders call these darkened walls a laundry room. How can we as women change these dark walls into bright and cheerful rooms? We look to the advertisements in our local magazines for help. In a recent publication of Family Circle magazine, the advertisers of Clorox 2 Bleach-Free, have chosen to use vibrant colors, two animated laundry bottles and bold print to erase the idea that doing laundry needs to be a dark and lonely chore The top two-thirds of this advertisement depicts a white washing machine with a white tiled back splash, faded softly into the background. Also faded into the background, a bouquet of pink flowers with green leaves which decorates the upper right hand corner of the ad. The advertisers hope your subscious will pick up these props. But the main focus of this ad, (for your Conscience) are two life-like laundry bottles. On top of the faded washing machine is a neatly stack of brightly colored clothes. With the suns reflection shining upon these two bottles, the reader is given the impression a laundry room does not need to reflect a dark dungeon. These vibrant colored laundry bottles seem very cheerful with smiling faces and raised eyebrows. Each displays its own individual packaging labels. The two bottles are apparently engaged in a pleasant conversation. The laundry bottle on the left, Ultra Clorox 2, having the vibrant blue container with a red head (lid) has her arm (handle) behind the second bottle. Advertisers want consumers to view laundry as a friendly gathering with friends not as a chore. The Clorox 2 Bleach-Free bottle decorated with a vibrant green bottle and yellow head (lid) has her arm (handle) strategically pointing to her label. Above these two life-like bottles, read in black bold letters Youre brilliant, Bleach-Free! You will be brilliant also if you use this product. In smaller letters and less boldness the Ultra Clorox 2 bottle states, You clean and brighten colors just like me. In response the Clorox 2 Bleach-Free bottle, replies, But I use enzymes instead of bleach. Below these two bottles are three sentences which strengthen the idea of buying Clorox 2 Bleach-Free. To summarize this laundry booster has special stain fighters; color brightners and uses enzymes instead of bleach to remove dirt and stains. The ad then closes with Bleach-Free Clorox 2 laundry Booster printed in bold black type with a bottle and a box of Clorox 2 Bleach-Free to the right. The market, advertisers of this ad most want to target are Women. This is depicted by the use of womens facial attributes on both of these friendly-smiling lids. Also this ad which appeared in the Family Circle magazine supports the assumption women would be reading this ad. Of course, Men may want to purchase this magazine at their local super-market and read for themselves the ad for Clorox 2 Bleach-Free. It is assumed, men would rather be reading a hunting or car magazine and not worrying if their laundry had a boost. The ad targets women who are concerned with dirt and stains. Women do not want the smell of bleach on their clothes nor on their loved ones. Women worry about the appearance of their children and spouse. Why, because society places a great importance on appearance. Why would advertisers use the knowledge of psychologist in this ad? For the simple reason, psychologist have proven, the power of emotions are strong. Take for example, the lifted eyebrows and smiling faces. Psychologist will tell you the ways in which we feel and express emotions actually represent a form of communication. Communicating emotions can motivate action by others. Do you smile back at someone who has smiled at you first,

Rhetorical analysis assignment - Essay Example For experienced practitioners of trauma care, this serves to refresh their learning while also introducing them to new developments and terminologies. For new students, it presents the direction in which trauma management has been moving over the last few years. Hence, it serves the learning needs of both contingencies and conception of the Transition Series has to be credited for this. It is quite obvious from the title of the article that the predominant audience for it would be EMT personnel. More broadly, it is of interest to all healthcare professionals including physicians, nurses, lab assistants, medical researchers, hospital administrators, etc. The background knowledge expected of the audience is quite minimal. Written in accessible English, the subject matter is easy to understand for even the lay readers. And where esoteric terms do arise, the authors make sure that the meaning is disambiguated. And since no complex scientific theories or complicated logical deductions are presented therein the reasoning ability required of the audience is barely beyond commonsense. The article is very informative. Part 1 of the series, which pertains to Assessment of the Trauma Patient, contains condensed information while also covering all facets of the assessment process. Fitting with the somber nature of the subject, the authors do not add humor or pun in their write-up. Moreover, since there is no need for using a persuasive/argumentative style for this type of content, the authors have shied away from employing it. The article, by virtue of elaborating on the trauma care process and giving reasons for the protocol to be followed by EMTs, belongs to the technical writing/educational instruction genre. Indeed, the final product is an exemplary piece of instructional design. It could also be classified under the ‘reference’ genre, for it neatly and compactly encapsulates mandatory procedures for EMTs to follow. Consistent with the ethos of technical/e ducational writing, the tone is one of objectivity, balance and sobriety. There is little room for expression of impassioned opinions or emotional reactions in the article. As a result the tone comes across as pedantic at places, but it is acceptable. The authors try to avoid esoteric terms and concepts as this could put-off new students to the subject. And where such usage becomes necessary, they provide sufficient contextual information. The employment of charts and tables with suitable relief coloring enhances the reading experience. The insertion of complementing photographs adjacent to the text enhances the reading experience and helps the audience to retain content for longer. The usage of second person narrative at places makes it easy for readers to get into the content. This technique not only directly involves the reader into the narrative, but also ensures that the theatrical and chaotic atmosphere of the emergency care unit is captured. For example, the following passage illustrates the point: â€Å"Your trauma patient is unstable. En route to the hospital, he begins bleeding into his airway. You are unable to reassess the patient after 5 minutes because you are performing suction almost constantly. You are concerned because your run report will not contain a second set of vital signs. What should you do ______?†
